The risks of trading gold, and how to limit them
The biggest risks of trading gold are leverage, fast price moves, slippage and misjudging your own risk appetite. You limit them with a fixed loss limit, small position sizes, diversification and by only depositing money you can afford to lose.
- Leverage magnifies gains and losses.
- A stop-loss limits losses, but is no guarantee.
- Start small and build up calmly.
- Read the terms and costs before you start.
What is leverage, and why is it risky?
With leverage you trade a larger position than your deposit. If the gold price moves 1%, your account can rise or fall by more than 1%. That makes trading more efficient, but losses also build up faster.
What is slippage?
Slippage means an order is filled at a different price than expected. It happens mostly around news or with a price gap after the weekend. A stop-loss at a certain level may then be filled lower, so a loss can be bigger than planned.
What is a drawdown?
A drawdown is the fall from a previous peak in your account. Even strategies with a strong record have drawdowns. The question is not whether they come, but how deep they can go and whether you can bear that.
How does Gold24 limit risk?
Important: in very fast markets the loss can exceed 30%. Past results are no guarantee for the future.
- A fixed risk limit per position.
- A hard stop at a 30% fall in the account: all positions then close automatically.
- Real-time AI risk monitoring that adjusts positions as the market changes.
- Your own account, with live insight into every trade.
What can you do yourself?
- Only invest money you can afford to lose, never borrowed money or money for fixed costs.
- Start with a small amount and see how it feels.
- Spread your wealth across several investments.
- Read the terms and ask for an explanation if anything is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lose more than I deposit?
That depends on the broker and the type of account. Many brokers offer negative balance protection for retail clients. Always check this in your broker’s terms.
Is a stop at 30% a guarantee?
No. In fast markets slippage or price gaps can make the loss larger.
How much should I deposit?
Only an amount you can afford to lose. At Gold24 the minimum is €1,000. It is fine to start small.
